Animal shelters do a tremendous job rehabilitating dogs. Some animals arrive at shelters in terrible conditions, but volunteers still step up to give them the love and care they need.
That was the case with Libby, a dog with a tumor the size of a volleyball. But her story now has a happy conclusion.
The Humane Society of Tacoma and Pierce County, Washington, took in Libby, a stray pit bull, in August. The dog was described as “full of life” with a “sweet face and kind eyes.”
Libby, on the other hand, had a major medical problem: a 10-pound tumor the size of a volleyball, one of the largest tumors they had ever seen:
Libby arrived at a busy time for the shelter: according to HSTPC, she was one of three urgent cases they responded to within 48 hours, and as Washington’s largest intake shelter, dozens of new animals were arriving each day. .
Despite this, they were committed to offering Libby the best care possible, even though they had no idea what the future held for the poor dog.
“She deserves the most compassionate care possible, but we do not know what the outcome will be for her at this time,” the shelter said in an August statement. “Our veterinary team is considering all possible options, starting with testing to determine the type of tumor Libby has.” At the moment, she is receiving painkillers to alleviate her discomfort, as well as the infinite love of our staff.”
After taking an x-ray of Libby, they discovered that the tumor was in the bone of her upper right leg, requiring amputation. The reactive inflammation caused the tumor to expand to its abnormal size, causing him excruciating discomfort.
The shelter was able to pay for Libby’s limb amputation thanks to generous donations from her supporters. The procedure, performed by veterinarians at BluePearl Pet Hospital, was a success and Libby no longer felt any discomfort.
Unfortunately, even though he had the tumor removed, he was diagnosed with aggressive bone cancer and his time on Earth may be limited. But there’s good news: Libby has found a home!
A veterinary technician fell in love with Libby and agreed to adopt her, according to HSTPC. Even though he knew Libby wouldn’t live long, he wanted to fill her final days with love.
“There is something in her eyes that asks for love and security,” said her new adoptee on Facebook. “I couldn’t turn my back on that.”
Libby was renamed “Wiggles” and she enjoys her new home, playing with her brother’s dog and her family and taking a nap on the couch.
“While we are not sure how much time she has left, we know she will spend her remaining days surrounded by love and comfort thanks to the kindness of our community,” the Humane Society said.
